What Dr Pimple Popper Taught Me About Instagram

It’s not for everyone, but a lot of people just cannot look away and that’s obvious with the numbers Dr. Pimple Popper produces on Instagram. I stumbled upon Dr. Sandra Lee’s Instagram account back before she had a half-million followers. I was fascinated with her videos of procedures and listened intently as she described what she was doing and why. She lit my nerd candle.

She routinely gave away zit extractors by hiding them in public areas that enticed her local followers to go out and find them. The more she did this, the more her audience grew and the more I was glued. Today she has 2.7 million followers and a series on TLC.

Why Instagram?

The numbers on Instagram are staggering! Just in this last year, Instagram the number of users increased over 33% with the majority of users being between the ages of 18-34. What is interesting is the fact that 60% of users discovered at least ONE NEW PRODUCT while scrolling through Instagram.

Not only has Dr. Pimple Popper grown a massive social media presence, but her practice as well. She’s crushed it on multiple channels, has a skin care line, and now a show on TLC just to name a few.

Instagram Engagement

Aside from having a large audience that is engaged multiple times a day, she also engages with them. It’s important to carry out conversations with your followers on any social media platform. Get to know your followers, who they are, where they live, and why they follow you. The more you learn about them, the more you learn about yourself, and the more you can serve your audience. Dr. Pimple Popper, Sandra Lee, has been consistent with learning and engaging with her audience that she was able to deliver what they want to see over and over again without fail.


I cannot insist to my clients enough that contents will insanely boost your social media presence and create so much brand awareness. A common misconception is that you have to spend a lot of money on an item to give away in order to create a buzz. I’ve held a contest for a small local shop on Instagram for a $25 Visa gift card that received over 1,000 likes and comments.

The account likes increase by over 500 in just 24 hours. We continued giving away $25 gift cards every month for a year and their Instagram account grew from 200 followers when I first started managing it, to 30,000+. The small office in the professional services industry had a surge in inquiries and increased their annual sales quite significantly.

Dr. Pimple Popper did the same by giving away extractors, a device she uses on blackheads and other small pimples. She extractor was placed in an envelope and hid it in a public area like a park or museum. Her Instagram post included an up-close image of the envelope in it’s hiding spot along with a clue in the caption. Followers went wild!

It’s not surprising to me how people of certain industries can just crush it on Instagram by not limiting themselves to saying, “oh I’m just a ______, no one is interested in what I do.” That’s BS. Why do you do what you do? Why are you interested in your profession? Certainly, in a world of 8 billion +, and an Instagram world of 800 million active users, surely you can do very well on social media. The internet allows us to find our tribes. You just have to find what makes you unique and think outside of the box. That’s exactly what we do for our clients.
