Using Hashtags on Instagram

Using hashtags on Instagram is one of the best ways to increase likes and comments on your posts.

If your Instagram account is public and your objective is to connect with like-minded people and increase your following, hashtags will play a very vital role in your daily posts.

If your account is private, only the people you allow to follow you will be able to see you in their hashtag search and IG feed. This will hinder your account growth. If you aren’t comfortable publicly sharing your posts, start another account that is niche specific to what you want more exposure to so you can still protect your private account with your close friends and family.

Did you know that just by using one hashtag you can increase your engagement by an average of 12.6%?

Selling Products/Services on Instagram

If you are selling products or services such as real estate, Etsy crafts, clothing, fitness apparel/equipment/supplements, or even direct sales products, you will need to study hashtags that your ideal audience is using.

You will also want to make sure that your IG account is set up as a business account. Look in your settings and follow the instructions to converting your account from personal to business. This is free to do and takes just a couple of minutes. Since converting my account to a business account, I have only seen an increase in followers and engagement.

Following Hashtags on Instagram

Since Instagram rolled out the ability to follow hashtags, this makes the ol’ hashtag game even more lucrative. This is also a great tool for you to use to find your ideal audience or clients.

If you are a real estate agent, for example you might want to follow hashtags and review geo tags in the area you serve. Not just city or township names, but local businesses like coffee shops, popular restaurants, or local retail shops.

If you create handmade crafts and sell them on Etsy or some other ecommerce site, find common hashtags used by people who buy products like yours. If you have a customer base already, ask them if you can follow them on IG. You may find that a lot of your customers are stay at home moms who use hashtags like #sahm #boymom #momofgirls, #momlife, or something along those lines. The more you can get in front of those hashtags the more eyes you will have on your products.

Opposed from following hashtags, you can also unfollow certain hashtags. Instagram wants you to keep their app open as much as possible. So, to do that they are putting things in front of you that you actually want to see. If there is a particular hashtag you don’t want to see, all you have to do is search for the hashtag, tap the three dots to the right, and select Don’t Show This Hashtag.

If a lot of people unfollow a certain hashtag, it will be flagged and eventually end up on the banned list. This is where you must be super choosey in the hashtags that you use.

It goes beyond just hashtags

Engagement. It takes more than just following people and having people follow you. If you want a loyal customer base that can’t wait for your next post, you have to engage with your audience. If you learn anything from this blog, remember these key tips for Instagram:

1. Reply to comments. All of them.

2. Like and comment meaningful words on other your ideal clients IG posts.

3. Your comments should be more than 5 words if you want them to count

4. Your comment needs to be relevant to their post. Avoid cliche comments like:

“I really like your feed.”

“Great post! Thanks for sharing!”

If it’s a post from someones beach vacation, say something meaningful like, “I hope you are having a great time on your vacation. That beach looks amazing! Can you recommend a great place to eat there?”

It literally took me 30 seconds to type that. If you did that 10-20 times a day, you’re only spending 5-10 minutes on commenting. It’s not taking a lot of time out of your day, plus you might just make someone else’s day! Talk about value and giving back!

Limited Hashtag Use & Banned Hashtags

To optimize your reach on IG, it’s a good practice to use as many relevant hashtags as possible. Instagram limits the number of hashtags you can use on each post to 30. hashtags. To keep my business posts from looking spammy, I tend to stick to 10-20 hashtags, but they are extremely relevant. Using random hashtags like #beachlife when the it’s a pic of you in the mountains isn’t exactly going to attract the right people if anyone at all if they are looking for beach life pics.

Instagram Bots

Instagram does a pretty good job of monitoring and banning fake accounts, but the number of fake accounts being created everyday is alarming. It takes good people like us to report these fake profiles as we come across them so IG can take care of them.

What is a bot?

A bot is an automated system that is programmed to like, comment, message, and follow accounts based on the parameters they set. They program the system with random comments and messages to send you. The comments never make any sense. Sometimes the comments are just emoji’s.

See why it’s important to comment things that are meaningful?

These people make fake accounts and post anywhere from 0-9 pictures that they have stolen off of another persons actual account. Sometimes they will even take use their real name. I had someone use my real name for their account, but their profile picture was a young teenage boy. They even posted some pictures from my personal account. I reported the account and IG has since taken it down.

As an added bonus for reading my blog about Using Hashtags on Instagram, here are some common hashtags to use on Instagram based on niche. If you continue reading, I will even share with you a short list of hashtags that are currently BANNED on Instagram.

List of Common Hashtags to Use Based by Niche

This is not an entire list of hashtags, obviously. The amount of words in the world, plus the combination of words is way too many to list.

This list is to help you come up with some ideas of your own. Don’t be afraid to come up with and use your own hashtag that is branded to you. If you appreciate this list, tag me ton Instagram @valoreymedia and hashtag #igniteyourfierce. I’d love to see your content, like your posts and follow you back!

Banned Instagram Hashtags

Hashtags get banned for a number of reasons. When people report posts that are against community standards, the commonly used hashtags amongst them eventually become banned for various amounts of time. Some permanently. You won’t get in trouble for using them, but you will be penalized in the way of not showing up in hashtag searches.

You may be surprised of some of the common hashtags that we all use that are on the banned list. I know I was when it came to certain holidays.

Keep in mind that this is NOT a complete list. It would take an excessive amount of time and resources to discover all the keywords that have been banned. I have collected a few from various sites and confirmed their validity. If you come across a banned keyword, please send us a message here.
